2022 WINNERSheffield SILVERAustralia's SmallTourism Town Award

Sheffield, TAS

Sheffield is a quirky rural town where history and art merge on town walls in the form of murals. In the 1980s, a small committee decided to paint a mural next to the town's public toilet to encourage bus tours to Cradle Mountain. Their hope was the mural would encourage tourists to walk around the town's Main Street to shop and get a bite to eat. Now almost forty years later, Sheffield is known as Australia's 'Town of Murals', and visitors come worldwide to see the over 100 larger-than-life murals that cover the town's walls. Sheffield is at the centre of the North-West's outdoor adventure playground where tourists can find their flow on Wild Mersey, hike the mighty Mount Roland, kayak Lake Barrington, and chase waterfalls in the bush. Visitors can indulge in some of the freshest products in Australia, grown in the country's richest soil and freshest air, while in Sheffield by booking farm stays, joining Chef-guided tours, or driving along with the Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail.

Sheffield is not just the 'Town of Murals' or The Gateway to Cradle Mountain but is a destination for visitors to awaken their senses and feed their souls.
