Wilderness

Kentish is home to Cradle Mountain, which sits alongside the Great Barrier Reef, Kakadu and Uluru as the premier wilderness attractions in Australia. This is a place of silence and isolation, an alpine world far removed from our own where the currawong song and wombat appearances immediately wipe the stresses of the world away. Cradle Mountain is an ideal location to bushwalk and immerse yourself in the wilderness, or indulge yourself in one of the alpine lodges or wilderness spas, interact with the local wildlife in its natural surrounds, or taste the extreme via canyoning, alpine horseback riding, helicopter rides or kayaking experiences.

But Kentish is a wilderness mecca and boasts far more than Cradle Mountain. Just travelling through the eucalypt forests of the Kentish Plains, the myrtle and wet sclerophyll forests of Moina which look straight out of Lord of the Rings, and the stark alpine plains of Daisy Dell and the Vale of Belvoir, to the pademelons and echidnas that stroll across the road in any part of the district, this is where wilderness envelops you.

From Australia’s only orchid reserve, to the spectacular views from Kimberleys Lookout and Bell Mountain, from short walks at O’Neills Creek and Sykes Sanctuary to the day walk to the summit of Mount Roland, and the multi-day treks through Cradle Mountain and just over the municipal border in the Walls of Jerusalem, Lake Mackenzie and Arm River tracks, the spectacular Bridal Veil, Champagne and No Name Falls at Moina, and Forth Falls at Wilmot, there is something for everyone.

A seashell museum 30 minutes from the coast is a curio in itself but wait until you step inside – it has one of the biggest and most diverse shell collections anywhere in Australia, featuring many rare shells.
